Finally

After years, what everyone has anticipated happened: Roger Federer breaks the slam record with an epic win over Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6(8), 7-6(7), 3-6, 16-14. I’ve always dreamed for this day to come, and now it finally has.

Congratulations Roger, you’re unbelievable.

FEDERER

David Foster Wallace once remarked that watching Federer is like “a religious experience.” I used to laugh at this blatantly fanboying hyperbole, but now, I’m beginning to see it.

For the first time ever, my jaws were hanging open full three minutes after the match, in sheer awe. This is Roger: not at his best, but still absolutely decimating his opponents with sound tactics and stronger-than-ever mentality, to make his way to his unthinkable 21st grand slam semi-final in a row, with beauty and subtlety never before seen in the game.

This man is beyond legendary — he is mythical.

Another anniversary

“Hi, thanks for coming,”
He extends his hand.

“It’s so nice to meet you!”
As I did mine.

Our hands touched,
up, down, up, down,
they shook…

So that’s how it went,
and more,

Roger Federer,
it certainly was a pleasure.

Something familiar

Federer vs Nadal in the Roland Garros Final, for the third time in a row. I won’t say much, because I don’t expect much either. I think Federer’s better games is definitely more intelligent and confident compared to last year and he looks calmer and his head clearer. However, he has more tendency to snooze, slack off and just plain suck at any given point of the match. But I don’t think he’ll allow himself to play that badly; sure there may be hiccups here and there but overall I expect a 1/3 spectacular, 1/3 solid and 1/3 decent match from him.

The other factor left is, of course, Nadal. Simply put, this guy is in the form of his life. He isn’t prone to stupid mistakes and is very consistent, so whatever we recently saw from him is more or less it. Not a very good news, because he basically demolished all that put before him. We saw signs of humanity in his third set against Djokovic, but he recovered soon enough to finally close the match. It’s in Nadal’s hands basically, and it’s difficult to see how he could lose.

My prediction? Despite all that I’ve said, and without regard to reason and reality, I’d say Federer in 5. Firstly because betting on Nadal is very boring, predictable and pointless (I’m quite the risk taker), secondly because I’m forever deluded and thirdly because I want my rather Roland Garros dream to still come true.

Anyway, whatever. *shrug*

My Roland Garros dream

The Final will be between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal with both players playing like they’ve never done before. Nadal will be quicker and would return even the most impossible balls, while Roger Federer would simply be in godmode. It will be a grueling seven-hour five-set match, with the final score being 7-6(18), 4-6, 4-6, 7-6(9), 15-13 to Roger Federer (of course) and a total of 18 breaks of serve between them. This win will come after saving 4 championship points in the fourth set and 11 in the fifth set, while Roger himself wins it on the third one via a shot ending all shots. The French crowd goes crazy, the whole world (except Spain and possibly even Serbia) follows suit, Roger Federer bawls like a baby and the next day news articles will declare the match one of the best ever and Federer the undisputed GOAT.

It will probably not happen — Roger might not even get into the Final. But if god* be so kind, he can ignore the details and just bless us with the same final result.

Indeed, a dream.

Idiot

He could’ve won it easily, 6-1 6-2, but still bloody lost it anyway.

Goodbye again, RG, for the third/fourth time. I no longer care.

It’s clay, clay and clay!

Contrary to what many Federer fans feel, I happen to like the clay season. This is primarily because, for once, Federer is an underdog, even if just against Nadal. I mean, of course I prefer Federer winning everything, but victory is much sweeter if he had to fight against the odds to do it.

This is why Monte Carlo 2008 is such a memorable tournament for me (though the ending could’ve certainly been better :p) It was so uplifting and inspiring to see him, from clawing his way to victory while being down two breaks against a nobody, to finally waking up in the quarterfinals to beat an archnemesis when everyone has written him off. It was a development so spectacular to witness.

Pineapple juice is back

It seems that more fastfood chains here have brought back pineapple juice to its menu, and the most recent I saw was Jollibee. It is a great decision I must say, and it pains me it took them so long to realize that the beverage is the best drink ever next to water.

Q. Do you think he’ll go on and win the final now?

Montreal TMS Updates

1. YEEEEEESSSSS!!!!! SAFIN VS NADAL IN THE SECOND ROUND! Wooohooohooo! Thank goodness Soderling retired against Safin. I never thought Marat can go pass him. :D

2. Federer/Allegro vs Bryan brothers in doubles! Wow wow. #1 singles vs #1 doubles team are playing against each other.

3. Nadal/Hewitt in doubles. :) ) I think they will make it far though. And I heard Nadal is teaming-up with Gasquet for Cincinatti.

4. I have taken a liking for Tommy Robredo. :3

5. Hope Federer beats Karlovic today.

Happy 26th birthday Roger

:)

It’s a bit old in tennis terms, but you can still do it. It was, after all, only 7 months since you had the tournament of your life. Such may never happen again, but that doesn’t mean your 2002 days will suddenly come knocking. Yes, you may have passed you peak, possibly, but just barely.
